Managing Director and Chartered Surveyor John Atherton launched Athertons Property and Land in 1994 and has grown the business successfully over the last 30 years. The business has recently expanded further by acquiring their newest office in Clitheroe, taking ownership of another long-standing estate agents, Anderton Bosonnet.
Co-Director John’s son Jim, says: “Our two businesses have had a professional relationship for many years. As local estate agents we appreciate the strong competition we have, and this sets the gold standard in the whole of the Ribble Valley. We have a lot of respect for Russell Anderton of Anderton Bosonnet so it’s great to now be working with him on the same team.”
Jim, who originally worked in the business at 17 before going to university, has been working within the property industry since 2013, with a background in residential surveying and valuation. He joined his father at Athertons full time in 2019, and whilst John, with his unique expertise and knowledge, specialises in rural property and land, Jim manages all the residential sales and valuations, alongside his day-to-day work as Director.
“Estate agency is very much a people business,” adds Jim. “It isn’t just about sales – we work closely with our customers in what can be a stressful time and it’s important for us to use our experience of buying and selling to make the whole process a positive one. Many of our clients are long-standing as they know our whole team has a wealth of experience, and importantly we pride ourselves on meeting all our clients’ individual needs – and now having acquired Anderton Bosonnet, allows us to expand our service even further.”
Russell Anderton echoes this: “John and I first met when he opened the Athertons office in Whalley. I was the manager of Black Horse Agencies at the time, and we always got on well, despite being competitors!”
After Anderton Bosonnet opened their Whalley office in 2000 Russell and John continued to get on well and helped each other where they could: “I’ve always enjoyed John’s company both professionally and socially,” Russell adds.
So, when John and Jim were looking to expand their business with an office in Clitheroe the timing was perfect, as Russell explains: “I wasn’t looking to retire and if I was to consider any union it would always have been with Athertons – joining forces allows me to focus on what I love, which is giving meaningful advice to our clients be they sellers or buyers and to enable the two businesses to be integrated smoothly, benefitting all our loyal customers.”
Such a positive story for both businesses – their teams, some of whom as Jim explains, have been with them for up to 20 years. It is also a positive for their valued client base too: “We are already feeling a very positive vibe,” explains Jim. “We have a nice combination of skills and experience across both offices and a synergy between our professional ethos of setting the very best standard in estate agency, with our customers at the centre of everything we do.”
Athertons Whalley, Clitheroe and the lettings arm of the business in Barrowford are the perfect partner to support your property sale, purchase or letting as one recent satisfied customer can testify to: “Having just completed the sale of my property I cannot thank Jim and his team enough! If you are thinking of placing your house on the market I would 100 per cent recommend Athertons. Jim was always on hand to guide me through the process and offer his expertise in a professional but personable manner – this was the same for the other members of staff at Athertons. In short, if I decide to sell in the future, Athertons will be my go-to!”
